Dr. David Zagzag: A Pioneer in Neuropathology and Advocate for Brain Tumor Research.


New York City, New York Oct 7, 2024 (Issuewire.com) - Dr. David Zagzag, a distinguished neuropathologist, has dedicated his career to advancing research and treatment options for patients affected by brain tumors. Currently serving as a Professor of Pathology and Neurosurgery at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Langone Health in New York, he is a key figure in one of the nation's foremost academic medical centers renowned for its dedication to patient care, education, and groundbreaking research. 

His journey into medicine began at 16 when his older brother introduced him to a medical library. After completing his medical degree at Lariboisiere-Saint-Louis School of Medicine in Paris in 1984, Dr. Zagzag pursued a Ph.D. in Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University in Montreal, graduating in 1988. He further honed his expertise at NYU Langone Health, completing a Surgical Pathology residency, a Neuropathology fellowship, and a postdoctoral training fellowship in Cell Biology in 1993. Today, he is board-certified in anatomic pathology and neuropathology and serves as Chief of the Division of Neuropathology.

In addition to his teaching duties to medical students, he teaches and trains residents and fellows and mentors graduate students pursuing Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. degrees. His dedication to developing the next generation of medical professionals and scientists is a testament to his belief in the importance of education in advancing medical science. His commitment to excellence in teaching has been recognized through numerous teaching awards, including the NYU All-University Distinguished Teaching Award.

As the Chief of the Division of Neuropathology at NYU Langone Health, one of the largest divisions of Neuropathology in the country, Dr. Zagzag oversees a clinical laboratory that processes over 1,900 neurological specimens annually, including more than 650 tumor cases ranging from biopsies to gross resections.  Dr. Zagzag has expertise in all areas of neuropathology and offers state of the art diagnostic services for all diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems including neoplastic, vascular, infectious and inflammatory and demyelinating disorders. The Division of Neuropathology at NYU Langone Health offers the most updated immunohistochemical stains and extensive and comprehensive molecular testing.

To boot, he leads the Microvascular and Molecular Neuro-Oncology Laboratory at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where he and his team investigate the molecular mechanisms underpinning glioma progression, the tumor microenvironment, particularly hypoxia, invasion angiogenesis, and immune evasion. His research aims to uncover new therapeutic strategies that can improve survival rates for patients with brain tumors. Dr. Zagzag has received support from numerous prestigious organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society and many private foundations. His work contributes significantly to the understanding of brain tumors and their treatment.

An accomplished author, Dr. Zagzag has published over 275 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in his field. He is affiliated with the World Health Organization and several professional societies, including the American Association of Neuropathologists and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. His contributions have earned him numerous awards, including the Lucien J. Rubinstein Award and the Award for Excellence in Clinical Science.

In addition to his clinical, research and educational roles, he serves as an expert scientific advisor and chair of professional advisory boards for various brain tumor foundations. He also has been an active member of the American Cancer Society's and National Institutes of Health study sections.
