Los Angeles, California Mar 29, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced today that Discovery Cube Los Angeles is among 30 finalists for the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. Discovery Cube Los Angeles is one of six institutions in California to be selected as a finalist for this award.
The National Medal is the nations highest honor given to museums and libraries that demonstrate significant impact in their communities. For more than 25 years, the award has honored institutions that demonstrate excellence in service to their communities.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Discovery Cube Los Angeles and Los Angeles Community Civic Leaders who were unwavering in their efforts to deliver accessible STEM programs and exhibitions to the children of Los Angeles, I am proud that the Cube has been named a finalist for this prestigious award, said Joe Adams, CEO of Discovery Cube Los Angeles. Through the help of our partners like city agencies, utilities, sports teams, corporations, foundations, and families, we have been able to make STEM accessible and inspiring for children who might not ever see a museum. This has been a long journey of a community that did not give up on a vision to bring STEM programming to our childrena vision that started over 30 years ago with the L.A. Childrens Museum and evolved over the last 12 years through the Discovery Cube. Most importantly, we see this recognition as an affirmation of what a community can achieve by working together over a long period of time to make a transformative impact.
So many museums and libraries across the country are committed to providing programs that are vital to the health and growth of engaged communities. We are very proud to announce the 30 finalists for this years IMLS National Medal, said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. These institutions represent the best of what museums and libraries do for their communities.
To celebrate this honor, IMLS is encouraging Discovery Cube Los Angeless community members to share stories, memories, pictures, and videos on social media using the hashtags #ShareYourStory and #IMLSmedals, and engage with IMLS on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. For more information, please visit the IMLS website.
National Medal winners will be announced in late May. Representatives from winning institutions will be honored for their extraordinary contributions during an in-person National Medals Ceremony this summer.
